Monica Torres, Executive Artistic Director, Actress, Founder

Mónica Torres

  • Monica is a native Puerto Rican pediatrician who graduated from San Juan Bautista School of Medicine in 1996 and finished her pediatric residency in 2000. She completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship at Case Western Reserve in Genetic Epidemiology.

    Despite her inclination for the sciences and medicine, her love for theater never stopped. She studied Dramatic Arts at the University of Puerto Rico in 1992. She is also a former member of the Yaguez Theater company in Puerto Rico. Some of her stage performances include Dollhouse, La Cantante Calva, and Arriba las Mujeres. She also participated in XXX11 Puerto Rican theater festival with the play Epoca de Celo.  

    In Cleveland, she co-founded and is currently the Executive Director of LatinUs, the first independent Latino/Hispanic theater Company in Ohio. With hard work and ambition, she was able to raise enough funds to make this dream a reality. Since 2018, LatinUs has produced La Cueva De Salamanca, Death and the Maiden, The Unusual Case of Miss Piña Colada, Divorcees, Evangelist and Vegetarians, La Casa de Bernarda Alba, Baños Publicos, S.A., Tiempo Muerto, La Siempreviva, and Gloria. Monica has participated as an actress and producer in all productions.

John Rivera-Resto

Technical Director, Actor, Artistic Director, Production Designer

  • John has forty years of artistic training and experience in fine arts, dramatic arts, art education, filmmaking, and visual design.

    Best known to the Cleveland public as a master muralist, designer, and portrait painter, his works have also made him a favorite with private collectors in the Caribbean, Central America, and the United States.

    In spite of John's expertise with the paintbrush, he actually prefers the writing pen as his creative instrument of choice.

    John returned to the LatinUs stage with La Muerte y La Doncella in April 2019. He has been an essential part of the company, becoming the Artistic Director and Production Designer of all productions.

Kivin Bauzó

  • Kivin Bauzó is a 1996 graduate of the City University of New York, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts, majoring in Speech and Theater. After graduation, he studied drama in London, England, and then completed a leadership internship in Costa Rica. Upon returning to New York City, he continue his career as an actor and in 1999, Kivin moved to Cleveland where he has collaborated in the development of the arts throughout Northeast Ohio.

    Kivin is also a talented photographer. His photo entitled “Barbershop” has received numerous awards and distinctions, including first place winner at the 3rd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest, Americana Category, 2006.

    He is currently an actor, Artistic Director, and Board Member for LatinUs Theater Company, Board Member for Metro West Community Development Organization, and supervisor for the Cuyahoga County Board of Developmental Disabilities.

    His stage performances include West Side Story (Bernardo), La Muerte y La Doncella, Isla Invadida, I-Juca-Pirama, Noche De Ronda, Camino Real, Con Olor a Tempestad, Los Amantes del Alto Manhattan, and Labio De Liebre. LatinUs’ Divorciadas, Evangelicas y Vegetarianas was his Stage Director debut.

Sandra Insaurralde

  • Sandra is an Argentine born in Buenos Aires. She is a Language and Literature teacher and has worked with young people and adolescents in state schools in her country. She has been training in drama for seven years, taught Complementary Language of Theater classes, and offered free theater workshops for teenagers. Sandra likes narrating and writing. Additionally, she loves to bake and decorate birthday cakes and prepare typical Argentine foods to entertain her family and friends.

    Sandra debuted with La Siempreviva and is proud to be part of LatinUs.

Nathalie Bermudez, actress, assistant director

  • Nathalie was born and raised in Colombia and has been in Cleveland for 5 years. She studied dramatic art at the Academia de Actuacion y Estudio de Actores in Cali, Colombia. Previous performances include Tu y Yo Somos Tres, Ojos de Mujer Fatal, Colombia Where is my Home, and Labio de Liebre. Nathalie is pursuing a degree in Liberal Arts at Tri-C Community College. Collaborations with LatinUs include La Cueva de Salamanca, La Muerte y La Doncella, The Unusual Case of Miss Piña Colada, and La Casa de Bernarda Alba.

    Nathalie is also a talented visual artist and considers herself an empirical artist whose work reflects our cultures and the beauty and the colors of our people. Nathalie decided that her artistic work would be based on the indigenous cultures of Latin America, reflecting where she comes from and making her feel more at home.

Angel Newhem Valenzuela, actor

Ángel Newhem Valenzuela

  • Ángel is a 33-year-old Akron resident born in Acaponeta Nayarit, Mexico. Tiempo Muerto was his third show, first play, and first collaboration with LatinUs Theater Company. Past productions include two musicals with MTP at the Akron Civic (The Rocky Horror Picture Show and RENT. He is honored to be part of LatinUs and grateful to take this journey on his native language, hoping that this is the beginning of many more productions.

Jhon Villegas Hernandez

  • Jhon is a Colombian actor with 10+ years of experience. He started his theater and acting studies with the Teatro Experimental de Cali and graduated from La Academia, Estudio de Actores. He has had a long career as an actor for theater, cinema, and television. He has expanded beyond acting into multiple aspects of performing arts including production, management assistant and cultural management. Jhon has worked in over 10 plays, which includes Esto no es un país serio, La Increíble y Triste Historia de la Cándida Eréndira y su abuela desalmada, and Colombian Paradise.
